Neighbors,

As the weather warms up, it’s the perfect time to step outside, connect with neighbors, and get involved in our community. I’m so happy to see the 26th Ward buzzing with activity. There are so many fun and meaningful ways to engage with one another and build stronger connections right where we live. Whether it’s through civic events, outdoor cleanups, or neighborhood programming, this is a great moment to get to know the people around you and take part in shaping the community we all share.

Here’s a glimpse at what’s coming up:

  • Tomorrow, we're sponsoring a housing event hosted by Inherent at Humboldt Park Health for prospective homebuyers.

  • That afternoon, you’re invited to a community forum hosted by United Neighbors of the 26th Ward, where candidates for the Cook County Commissioner appointment will share their vision and why they believe they’re the right choice. The forum begins at 1pm at 4013 W. North Ave. Registration not required.

  • On Wednesday at 6:30 PM, the Humboldt Park Advisory Council will screen a documentary on Jens Jensen, the visionary architect behind the design of Humboldt Park. Registration is required. Click here to register.

  • Next Saturday, April 26th there will be six different park cleanups across the ward in Humboldt, Mozart, Hermosa, Simons, Maple, and Beilfuss Parks. Huge shoutout to our incredible Chicago Park District supervisors and area managers for leading these efforts. Volunteering even a couple of hours can go a long way in making our green spaces more beautiful and welcoming for all.

  • Also at Humboldt Park, the Disney Foundation will host StoryWalks for children ages 5 to 8. This is a wonderful opportunity to help young people build their connection to nature. You can sign up at bit.ly/2025EARTH. Space is limited, so don't snooze.

  • On Saturday, May 3, I will be pumping up my tires and hopping on my bike for our annual Connecting Neighborhoods: Bike the Boulevards! This is a fun co-governance activity that allows us to really understand how our streets feel as cyclists and pedestrians. West Town Bikes and Equiticity have been phenomenal partners, and with their support, we are expanding our route to Garfield Park. Divvy will be partnering with us to offer free bike rental, and ALSO will be providing food and a bounce house at our endpoint in Humboldt Park. No registration needed!

  • On Friday, May 9th join Palenque for their next Hermosa Cultura Spring/Summer Pop Ups at 4208 W Armitage from 4-7pm. There will be fun family activities, performances and much more. Registration is not required.

  • Looking ahead to Saturday, May 10, the Humboldt Park Advisory Council is hosting a Spring Market at the boathouse, featuring local vendors, handmade goods, and arts and crafts for kids. Vendor applications are open now. Vendor Application & Volunteer Form. Also, give them a follow on their new Instagram account: hpac_chi.

CDOT Confirmed Projects

Construction season is here, and that means crews are out across the 26th Ward working to repair sidewalks, resurface streets, and upgrade the infrastructure our communities rely on every day.

I have been working closely with CDOT to make sure our neighborhoods get the care and investment they deserve. I know this work can be inconvenient, but it is also a critical part of building safer and stronger blocks for all of us. You can check what is happening near your home or business by visiting chistreetwork.chicago.gov and entering your address. Thank you for your patience and your partnership as we keep improving the ward together. As always, reach out to our office with any questions or concerns. We are here to serve.

Educational Leaders Meeting

This morning, I met with 26th Ward educational leaders for an overdue update from our schools. Community partner and team Humboldt Park Patriots shared their spring and fall programming, AI Safety Awareness offered professional development opportunities, and ChiArt’s talked about their upcoming Race Your Hearts for Arts 5k. One principal asked what alders’ offices typically offer schools, and I reflected that while I am uncertain about how my predecessor worked with schools, I know that being in community with educators feels like home. I want to partner with our educators and scholars in big ways, like TIF infrastructure upgrades, and smaller ways, like visiting civics classes. Thank you to every educator who loves and cares for our young people. You all are amazing.

Young person curfew

The proposed youth curfew ordinance before the City Council will be heard in committee this month. Based on my lived experiences as an educator and the studies linked below, this ordinance poses significant risks to our community. Evidence consistently shows that curfews are ineffective in reducing crime among young people. Instead, they often lead to increased police encounters, disproportionately affecting Black and Brown youth, and exacerbating tensions between communities and law enforcement. This approach fails to address the root causes of youth violence and criminalizes young people for being in public spaces. If you care about youth justice and civil rights, take a few minutes to read the articles below. They break down what’s at stake.

There’s so much happening throughout the 26th Ward, and I’ll continue highlighting opportunities for all of us to come together. Whether it’s through civic forums, volunteer cleanups, or family-friendly fun, let’s keep finding ways to connect, show up, and build community together. Hope to see you around this weekend.

In solidarity,

Alderperson Jessie Fuentes

Boulevard Landmark District Extension Project

The “Logan Square Boulevards District” is a significant part of our community's history and character. An extension of this Landmark District is currently being considered. This process typically takes 6 to 9 months and includes communication and notices throughout the process.

This project builds on decades of historic preservation work and reflects the ongoing commitment of the 26th Ward to encouraging sustainable development and maintaining the unique identity of our neighborhoods.

You can learn more about the project, review FAQs, and submit your thoughts at the26thward.org/boulevard-landmarking.

26th Ward Zoning

The 26th Ward's zoning process requires anyone requesting a zoning change to first complete a zoning intake form. After review, they present their request to the Zoning Advisory Committee and answer questions. In some cases, they may also present at a community input meeting.

We are currently reviewing zoning change requests for the following properties.

Administrative ICE Warrant VS. Judicial Warrant

🔹 Administrative ICE Warrant (First Image - SAMPLE)

  • Issued by: DHS, not a court.

  • Purpose: Allows ICE to arrest for immigration violations.

  • Limitations: Does not allow entry into your home without consent.

  • Key Detail: Signed by an immigration officer, not a judge.

🔹 Judicial Warrant (Second Image)

  • Issued by: A U.S. District Court.

  • Purpose: Authorizes law enforcement to enter, search, or seize property/individuals.

  • Authority: Signed by a judge, allows entry without consent.

⚠️ Why It Matters:
An ICE administrative warrant does not grant officers the right to enter your home—only a judicial warrant does. Always ask to see the warrant, verify details, and seek legal help if needed. For assistance, contact legal professionals or trusted community organizations.
