ICE Criminal Charges Filed
At the start of this week, Commissioner Jessica Vásquez and civil rights attorney Brian Orozco organized a press conference with survivors of ICE violence to file police reports with the Chicago Police Department alleging crimes committed by ICE agents. Marimar Martinez and Dayanne Figueroa’s stories were harrowing—they recounted the violence inflicted by agents, voices breaking during the worst of their stories. The journey it has taken to get to the filing has been challenging, but as Commissioner Vásquez shared, to file police reports together makes the collective demand for accountability both public and impossible to ignore. |

Community Zoning Meeting Join us on Thursday, August 20, from 6-7:30 PM at the Mozart Park Fieldhouse, 2036 N. Avers Ave., for a community meeting regarding a proposed zoning change at 3208-16 W. Armitage Ave. The proposal would transform a partially vacant lot and existing building into a new 38-unit mixed-use rental development that includes affordable housing units. This meeting is an opportunity for neighbors to learn more about the proposal, ask questions directly to the development team, and share feedback before the project moves forward in the zoning process. Community input is an important part of how we evaluate development in the 26th Ward, and we encourage residents to join the conversation. RSVP: bit.ly/zoning3208 |

La Casa Norte - Groundbreaking This week, we joined La Casa Norte, city leaders, community partners, and neighbors to celebrate the groundbreaking of the new North Hotel youth shelter on California Avenue. Together, we marked the beginning of this next chapter with a wall breaking as La Casa Norte moves forward with transforming the former North Hotel into a safe and stable home for young people experiencing homelessness. The new North Hotel will provide 40 private rooms for young people ages 18–24, along with supportive services designed to help residents build stability and move toward permanent housing. Our most vulnerable young people will have privacy, security, and a place of their own as they navigate homelessness. We are proud to welcome La Casa Norte’s second location to Humboldt Park, and to continue to work on making housing a reality for our residents, no matter their age or circumstance. |

Community Roses
We had an amazing artist as part of our 2026 intern cohort this summer! And as a result of Camila’s brilliance, we were able to have a beautiful program and sticker for our Community Roses Youth Town Hall.
To Paco and David, thank you for all the loving and caring work you did alongside the Bikes N Roses apprentices. Ale, Julio, Hailey, Evan, Emily, Valery, Dani, Blaise, Asher, Nate, Alyssa, Tooka, Dylan, Bryan, Kevin, Brandon, David, Kimberli, and Sam, thank you for being brave and opening up your space to our neighbors. |

Back-To-School Bash Recap
Yesterday, despite the rain, 450 parents and young people showed up to our 4th Annual Back-to-School Bash at Military Leadership Academy. We had over 55 vendors offering an array of resources and school supplies for our families. We raffled ten bikes donated by Bikes N Roses and one rain barrel donated by MWRD. Epic Academy provided over thirty haircuts to young people to start the new school year looking fresh and with confidence. The day was filled with games, youth performances, snow cones, a youth DJ, dancing, and raffle prizes. Thank you to Principal Baeza, Ms. Pantoja, Peterson, John, and Mateo at Military Leadership Academy for graciously opening up their school to us. A big shout-out to our sponsors, vendors, and parents who came out. We hope you have a great start to the school year. |

| | The 26th Ward's community-led zoning process requires anyone requesting a zoning change to first complete a zoning intake form. After review, they present their request to the Zoning Advisory Committee and answer questions. In some cases, they may also present at a community input meeting. |
