Hi Neighbors,
This week in the 26th Ward, we are celebrating community, honoring legacy, and making it easier to take care of yourself and your neighborhood.
Recycling Extravaganza — Tomorrow, Saturday April 11
Did you know that the stack of old bills and bank statements makes up 40% of all waste in the United States? When it ends up in a landfill instead of being recycled, it releases methane into the air. But we can do something about it!
Tomorrow is our Recycling Extravaganza from 9 am to 12 pm at 1301 N. Humboldt Dr. Free paper shredding, electronics recycling, clothes and shoes drop-off, and prescription drug take-back. All in one place. Your personal information does not belong in a trash can. Shredding is also one of the simplest ways to protect yourself from identity theft. If your name, account number, or address is on it, shred it. Come through and leave lighter. Construction on Humboldt Drive is active. Enter through North Ave.

Sculptural Diversification Project
As part of the Chicago Park District’s Sculptural Diversification Project, there is a proposal to commission a statue of Dr. Pedro Albizu Campos in Humboldt Park. This effort recognizes the park’s deep significance as a cultural anchor for Chicago’s Puerto Rican community. This project reflects years of community advocacy to ensure our public spaces honor the histories, struggles, and contributions of the communities who call them home. A statue of Albizu Campos would serve not only as a point of pride but as a gathering space that uplifts Puerto Rican identity, resilience, and self-determination. We encourage community members to attend the public discussion on Tuesday, April 14, at 6:30 pm at the Humboldt Park Field House or share feedback online. |

Renaming of Park 514
On Thursday, the Chicago Park District Commissioners voted to begin the Phase I of naming Park 514 to Fillenwarth “Patty” Park. Park 514 is right down the street from where Sister Patty ministered and supported so many Humboldt Park families. Thanks to the advocacy of Maggie Martínez, we are one step closer to being able to honor Sister Patty’s legacy! You can read all about Sister Patty here, and we are hoping to gather as much support as we can for this renaming. Consider submitting comments here by May 24 to let the Park District know just how powerful her impact was. |

Business Resources Website Page
We’re excited to introduce our new Business Resources page on the 26th Ward website, designed to better support local entrepreneurs, small business owners, and those looking to invest in our community. This page brings together key information on business-related zoning, permitting, city departments, and available resources all in one place, making it easier to navigate the process of starting or growing a business. Whether you’re opening your doors for the first time or expanding an existing business, our office is committed to helping you find the information and connections you need to move forward. |

Welcome to La Michoacana One
Last Friday, my Chief of Staff, Juanita, attended the grand opening of La Michoacana One at 4117 W. North Ave. We proudly congratulate René Ramirez on launching his second business venture. Before becoming a business owner, René quickly rose to the position of store manager, successfully overseeing a $1.5 million operation. After years of helping others grow their businesses, he is now building his own. We wish René and his partner continued success and are proud to welcome them to the 26th Ward. |

Jumping Jack Program opens 4/15 |
|
|
|
The Jumping Jack Program is limited to residential block parties within Chicago. Events on private property, parks, forest preserves, schools, libraries, or churches; private parties; birthdays; community events; and festivals are not eligible. Applicant must reside on the block where the Block Party is taking place.
If completed correctly, applicants will receive an immediate auto reply confirming their request. If no confirmation is received, the application was not submitted.
To avoid errors, applicants should: Complete the application on a computer using Google Chrome. Manually fill in each field. Auto fill can cause errors. For the block party address, add a period after the street direction (N., S., E., or W.). Press SUBMIT at the end of the application. Applicants will receive an approval or denial email once processed. Jumping Jacks are available Saturdays and Sundays only. Demand is highest on Saturdays, so consider Sundays. The program will not operate on Saturday, July 4. Only one request per block per season will be approved. Multiple requests from the same block will be denied. Approved block parties receive one Jumping Jack for four hours. Delivery is between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., with pickup between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. Specific time requests cannot be accommodated. If the wrong date is selected, email JumpingJack@cityofchicago.org for instructions. Last-minute changes will not be honored. Requests must be submitted through the registration portal. Email requests will not be accepted. Must obtain a permit from their Aldermanic Ward office to hold a block party. Requests are first come, first served.
